What is Hyrox?

A complete overview of the Hyrox fitness race format β€” its history, how it works, and why it's the fastest-growing indoor fitness competition in the world.

The World’s Largest Fitness Race

Hyrox is a global fitness competition that combines running with functional workout stations in a standardized indoor format. Think of it as a marathon meets CrossFit β€” but with a fixed, repeatable format that lets you benchmark your performance against athletes worldwide.

Founded in 2017 in Hamburg, Germany by Christian Toetzke and Moritz FΓΌrste (an Olympic gold medalist in hockey), Hyrox has exploded from a single event to over 60 races across 30+ cities on multiple continents.

How a Hyrox Race Works

Every Hyrox race follows the exact same format, no matter where in the world you compete:

  1. Run 1km
  2. Complete a functional workout station
  3. Repeat 8 times

That’s it β€” 8 rounds of running + workout, totaling 8km of running and 8 workout stations. The course is always indoors, typically in a large arena or exhibition center.

The 8 Workout Stations

After each 1km run, you face one of these stations in order:

Why Hyrox is Different

Standardized Format

Unlike OCR (obstacle course racing) or CrossFit competitions where workouts change every event, Hyrox is always the same. This means you can train specifically for it and track your improvement over time.

Inclusive by Design

With multiple categories β€” Open, Pro, Doubles, Relay, and Age Groups β€” Hyrox welcomes everyone from first-time racers to elite athletes. You don’t need to qualify; just sign up and race.

Global Ranking

Every Hyrox time is logged in a worldwide database. You can see how you rank against athletes in your age group, your country, or globally. This ranking system fuels healthy competition and repeat racing.

The Atmosphere

Hyrox events are held in massive indoor arenas with pumping music, LED lighting, and thousands of spectators. The energy is electric β€” it’s as much a spectacle as it is a race.

Who is Hyrox For?

Everyone. Seriously. Whether you’re:

  • A runner looking for a new challenge beyond road races
  • A gym-goer who wants to test their fitness in competition
  • A CrossFitter seeking a different competitive format
  • A complete beginner who wants an inspiring goal to train toward

Hyrox has a category for you. The Doubles format (where you split stations with a partner) and the Relay format (teams of 4) make it especially approachable for newcomers.

The Growth Story

  • 2017: First Hyrox event in Hamburg with ~1,000 participants
  • 2019: Expanded to 8 European cities
  • 2020-2021: Launched in the USA and UK despite COVID
  • 2022: 50,000+ participants globally
  • 2023: 100,000+ participants, launched in Asia and Australia
  • 2024-2025: 250,000+ participants across 30+ cities worldwide
  • 2026: World Championship events, continued global expansion

Hyrox has become the fastest-growing mass participation fitness event in the world, filling the gap between traditional running races and functional fitness competitions.
