Hyrox Race Categories

All Hyrox race divisions explained β€” Open, Pro, Doubles, Relay, and Age Groups. Find the right category for your fitness level.

Choose Your Category

Hyrox offers multiple race categories to accommodate every fitness level. Here’s a complete breakdown to help you pick the right one.

Individual Categories

Open (Men & Women)

The most popular category and where most first-timers start. Open uses lighter weights on the functional stations, making it accessible while still being a serious challenge.

Who it’s for: Anyone from fitness enthusiasts to seasoned athletes tackling their first Hyrox.

Team Categories

Doubles (Open & Pro)

Race as a pair. Both athletes run every 1km segment together, but you split the workout stations however you like. One person could do all the SkiErg while the other does all the sled work β€” or alternate however suits your strengths.

Key rules:

  • Both athletes must run together (within a reasonable distance)
  • Stations can be split freely between the pair
  • Only one athlete works at a station at a time
  • Available in Men, Women, and Mixed divisions

Who it’s for: Perfect for friends, couples, or anyone who wants a shared race experience with a strategic twist.

Relay (4 Athletes)

A team of 4 athletes each completes 2 stations + 2km of running. Each athlete does 2 consecutive rounds (run + station, run + station), then tags the next person.

AthleteRunsStations
Athlete 1Runs 1 & 2SkiErg + Sled Push
Athlete 2Runs 3 & 4Sled Pull + Burpee Broad Jumps
Athlete 3Runs 5 & 6Rowing + Farmers Carry
Athlete 4Runs 7 & 8Sandbag Lunges + Wall Balls

Who it’s for: Office teams, running clubs, gym groups, or friends who want a taste of Hyrox without committing to the full race.

Age Group Categories

Hyrox also recognizes age group rankings so you can compare yourself against athletes your own age. Age groups apply to all individual categories (Open and Pro):

  • 16–24
  • 25–29
  • 30–34
  • 35–39
  • 40–44
  • 45–49
  • 50–54
  • 55–59
  • 60–64
  • 65+

You don’t need to register for a specific age group β€” your age is automatically categorized based on your birth year. Rankings are available on the Hyrox app and website after the race.

Which Category Should You Pick?

Here’s a quick decision guide:

First time racing? β†’ Start with Open. The lighter weights let you focus on completing the race and understanding the format.

Gym regular with good fitness? β†’ Open for your first race, then move to Pro if your time is competitive.

Competitive athlete? β†’ Go straight to Pro and chase the leaderboard.

Want to race with a friend? β†’ Doubles is incredibly fun and strategic.

Want to try Hyrox with low commitment? β†’ Relay β€” you only do 2km of running and 2 stations.
