What No One Tells You About Your First Hyrox

Your first Hyrox is a whirlwind of adrenaline, pain, and triumph. After going through it (and talking to hundreds of first-timers), here are the 10 things we all wish we’d known.

1. You WILL go out too fast

The starting atmosphere is electric. Music pumping, crowd cheering, adrenaline surging. Every first-timer sprints the first 1km way too fast. Your first run should feel almost embarrassingly easy. Trust your watch, not your ego.

2. The sled weights are real

If you haven’t practiced with race-weight sleds, you’re in for a shock. 102kg (men Open) doesn’t sound that heavy until you’re pushing it across a floor after 3km of running. Train with the actual weights before race day.

3. Burpee Broad Jumps break people

Station 4 is where races are won and lost. It’s the most metabolically demanding station, and it comes right before rowing — which demands fresh legs. Pace yourself here. Seriously.

4. Transitions eat time

The walk from the end of a run to a station (and vice versa) takes 30–60 seconds each time. Over 16 transitions, that’s 8–16 minutes. Jog through them. Set up at stations immediately. Every second counts.

5. Grip is everything

Your hands will suffer. The sled pull, farmers carry, and sandbag lunges all demand grip strength. If your forearms fail, your race suffers. Train grip specifically for at least 6 weeks before your race.

6. The atmosphere is incredible

This isn’t a quiet 10K in the park. Hyrox events are held in massive arenas with DJs, LED screens, fog machines, and thousands of spectators. It feels like a sporting event. Embrace it.

7. You don’t need to be “fit enough”

The most common thing we hear: “I’ll sign up when I’m ready.” You’re ready now. The Open category is designed for everyday athletes, and the Relay is perfect for absolute beginners. Sign up, then train toward it.

8. Nutrition matters more than you think

Skipping breakfast, trying a new energy gel, or not eating enough carbs the day before — all common first-timer mistakes that lead to bonking around station 5–6. Plan your nutrition like you plan your training.

9. The finish line feeling is addictive

Crossing that Hyrox finish line, hearing your name, and grabbing that finisher patch — it’s one of the best feelings in fitness. Most first-timers sign up for their next race within a week.

10. Your second race will be MUCH faster

Now that you know the format, the venue, the pacing, and the stations, your second Hyrox will typically be 10–20 minutes faster. The learning curve is steep, and experience is a massive advantage.
